Hinders - official name
change:
"Avoidable Hinder"
has been renamed to "Penalty Hinder".
Respectively, "Dead Ball and Back Swing Hinders" have
been renamed to "Replay Hinders".
The term "Avoidable Hinder" never did make much sense to me.
Finally we now have terms that make sense. Players have
always had the
responsibility of giving their opponent the option of hitting a shot straight
to the front wall or a cross court shot. However,
there was a lot of reluctance by referees to make the
call "Avoidable Hinder" if a player failed to
do so. The new terminology removes some of the subjectivity
previously attached to the term Avoidable
Hinder". Failure to move is now termed a
"Penalty Hinder", and we all know that the
word penalty means that some action will be taken, which
in this case means you lose the rally. The term
"Replay Hinder" is also a very clear term. I believe you will now see
more referees make the "Penalty Hinder" call without much argument from the
players. - Andy Pawlowski - AmPro
Instructor.
